Sex education in the UK The role of schools in providing information about sexual matters is much debated, with some arguing that school-based sex and relationships education (SRE) may accelerate the onset of sexual activity and that parents should provide the information (giving them control over what is delivered and when) (House of Commons Education Committee, 2015) Published in the Department for Education and Employment (DFEE, 2000) biological elements of sex education; puberty, reproduction, sexual transmitted infection must be taught to all pupils through National Curriculum Science, which is compulsory in state-maintained schools. In addition state schools must teach the wider personal and social aspects of sex and relationships and any state funded school that provide SRE must have ‘due regard’ to the government guidance (Department of Education, 2013). However, there is no statutory curriculum so schools are encouraged to develop their own programs of study.
