Mary Shelly Essay In this essay I will be commenting on the effects Kenneth Branagh, the director and actor, has used on the creation scene in the film Mary Shellys Frankenstein. The film was released in 1994 but before it was a film it was a novel that was published in 1818 by a writer named Mary Shelly. The film version of this was then named with the writers names in the title in order to make it sound authentic. The film has a gothic/horror genre or theme, and I will try to analyse the different types of effects used e. g. camera angle, sound and music, lighting and special effects, costume, make-up hair and props. Robert De Niro plays the monster in this film. The reason that such a famous actor was picked to play this role and not just any random person in a suit is because then Kenneth Branagh can put Robert De Niros name on the front cover of the film to show that they have at least one famous person in the film. Another reason might be because then other people, considering watching or buying this film, might want to watch it to see the famous actor. When Victor Frankenstein, played by Kenneth Branagh, first enters the laboratory he is dressed in a red cape with gold embroidery, this has connotations of royalty and power. A boxer might wear this type of cape before he begins to fight to show that he is scared of nothing and is a hard man. Branagh, knowing this, is trying to project it on Victor. Victor has got nothing else on his top half but on his bottom half he has tatty trousers and shoes to show that he hasnt had much time to spend on appearance. Another technique Branagh uses to make Victor seem strong and/or bold is by filming him through a low angle shot, making it seem like he is towering above everyone else. Also, non-diegetic, fast paced, loud music is played to make it seem like what he is doing is really important but also that he is in a rush to finish it and make history. Not only is Victor made to seem important but so is the monster by pulling it up with the pulley on to the track and as it ascends, a bright light is shone directly above it. Since this light is so strong it creates a circle of light around the creation. I believe that the effect of this is to suggest the creation as a gift to God or even to make it seem like it is so close to him that Victor can show God he is about to create life just like he did. Victor is filmed using a high angle shot running at the same speed as the monster on the cradle. The effect of this is to show that Victor is completely dependant on the creation of the monster, therefore not letting it out of his sight. If Victor didnt care as much about it, he would have waited by the tank where the track finishes. Lots of diegetic sound is used when the log knocks the cradle and as it is running along the tracks. When the creature is put into the tank, and is above the fire, Branagh uses a series of extreme close up shots as the spikes are being stabbed into the monster. This type of shot is used so that you can almost feel the spikes going into you as you sit at home or in the cinema. This also creates sympathy for the monster. As the camera shots dissolve through all the bits of machinery and all the electric lines, which have sparks coming out of them to show that they are high voltage, it shows that there are loads of different things going on at the same time. The effect of this is to show that the task of creating the monster is extremely difficult because there are a lot of things to do and think about. While Victor is fastening a tube to the tank the camera slowly zooms out and pans to the right to show that the tube is connected to a big sack, which is shaking, that retains electric eels and a lot of amniotic fluid. The effect of this is to suggest that this is like a real birth because Victor uses amniotic fluid held in a sack or a container like in a real mothers womb. The sack is also filmed in a low angle shot to make it seem as it is a main part in the creation of the monster. As the eels are released into the tank they start to attack the monster at first. Then it looks like they are trying to heal him as they go for stitches to make it seem like they are repairing the monster. The first of this part is filmed using a close up, panning shot running up the monsters body, then an over the shoulder shot of the eels repairing him is employed. There is a lot in the mise en scene when Victor is standing on the tank. Victor himself standing on the tank, with the sack that held the amniotic fluid in, shaking the chains, looks to me like he has got eight hands due to the way the light is shone onto the sack. I think that if this was deliberate then it is meant to portray that he is Godlike with eight hands meaning that he is more powerful than an everyday man. The fire under the tank looks like it has been over fuelled so it is jumping up the side or even dancing.

Genetically Modified plants have changed how food is grown, although they have become very controversial. The purposes of Genetically Modified plants are to decrease time to maturity, increase resistance to disease, increase in nutrition, and reduce the use of herbicides. Genetically Modified plants can be very beneficial in many aspects not only to the United States but also to many underdeveloped countries such as Africa. The Encyclopaedia Britannica defines Genetically Modified Organisms as: ââ¬Å"An organism whose genome has been engineered in the laboratory in order to favor the expression of desired physiological traits or the production of desired biological productsâ⬠(Diaz and Fridovich-Keil). Genetically Modified plants are created by altering the DNA of the plant. The alteration, which is known as genetic modification, causes the DNA to be genetically different than how it would be naturally. Genetic modification makes it possible to transfer genes from a non-related species of plants. Genetic modifications are performed on many organisms such as: animals, plants and bacteria. Some products produced by genetic modification include feeds, medicines, vaccines, foods and fibers. Feed and products grown for food, are the most well known and most controversial genetically modified products. In the United States, genetically modified foods were approved for human consumption in 1995. ââ¬Å"By the end of 2010, genetically modified crops covered more than 9.8 million square kilometers of land in 29 countries worldwide- one-tenth of the worldââ¬â¢s farmland.â⬠(Diaz and Fridovich-Keil). According to EB ââ¬Å"60% of all processed foods consumed in the United States contained at least some genetically modified ingredientsâ⬠(Diaz and Fridov... ...e U.S., according to recent analysis from the U.S. Department of Agricultureâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Foodâ⬠). Since the majority of the population does not benefit from genetically modified organisms they tend to want to reject them. Consumers do not want to pay higher prices for the food they consume, but without increasing the yield per acre, farmers cannot recoup the higher costs of machinery, fuel, fertilizers, and seed used to produce the food. There are many positive attributes to genetically modified plants, farming is less harsh on the environment, it can help feel the ever growing population of the world on less farmland, and produce more nutritious food. With the acceptance of this technology many problems facing underdeveloped nations could be solved. With more education everyone can benefit from genetically modified organisms and more research would be possible.

Response to the Film William Faulkner, a Life on Paper My first response in general to the film is how utterly scary many of the people interviewed were. Coming from Central Florida, I can honestly say I am not from the Deep South, as there were several instances where someone was speaking in the film and I simply could not figure out what they were saying through their accent. Of the people interviewed who were not locals from Mississippi, many of the Hollywood representatives were decidedly more intelligible yet no less intimidating, many of them men I would not want to be stuck talking to in a party. But aside from such characters, the film created an interesting portrait of Faulkner the father. One could certainly see intent on the filmmakersââ¬â¢ part to cast Faulkner the father in the shadow of Faulkner the author. The film shows interviews with two of Faulknerââ¬â¢s daughters: one full and one stepdaughter. Intriguingly, the latter of these is shown speaking on camera only once, a scene in which she characterized her stepfatherââ¬â¢s severe drinking problems and how scared she was of her stepfather during those experiences. Jill, his full daughter, seemed to go along with these sentiments. She recalls one time she tried to stop him from drinking, to which he responded with the most memorable line of the film: ââ¬Å"Nobody remembers Shakespeareââ¬â¢s child,â⬠which apparently was effective in discouraging any further attempts to stop his drinking. Jill seems ambivalent of her father. On the one hand, she knows she is on camera speaking about her famous and beloved father, and is thus expected to like him. And indeed, she does effectively convey some sense of love for her father. But she simultaneously embeds a disconnectedness from her father. If she had not repeatedly referred t o him as Poppy, one would never catch on that she was his daughter. Her revelations and reminisces seem hardly familial, but rather read the same way all of the other memories of him do: enigmatically and unfamiliarly. The film suggests Faulkner does not feel disappointed in having a daughter rather than a son, and I might go so far as to believe that this characterization of the unfamilial child would have existed for a son as well.

The impingement of circumstances and how man has failed in their presence: a comparison of A&P and Araby
John Updikeââ¬â¢s A&P and James Joyceââ¬â¢s Araby were born out of close contexts. In fact, both writers are being tagged with a similar designation. Both are believed to be modernist writers.They are read side by side the modern temper ââ¬â the rise of industrialization, the attenuation of manââ¬â¢s substance and the meaning of his world and the dominance of several routines which stapled itself on manââ¬â¢s life and reduce his essence.As we look at A&P and Araby, we can confirm that they both uphold the modern temper, as they both mark pointed facets of this period ââ¬â the apparent inability to rise from oneââ¬â¢s circumstances and the extent by which these circumstances govern us.In A&P, Sammy resigned on his job after he felt like his boss in the shopping store humiliated the girls who wore bathing suits in the store. Ultimately, he felt obliged to stand up for his gesture of quitting and not turn away from it. He stood up for his decision and even though the future has suddenly looked uncertain for him, he kept on going, knowing that he can no longer revert from his action.Meanwhile, in Araby, a young boy was eaten up by his frustration after he failed to purchase something for the girl he felt infatuated for. He was late in going to the bazaar ââ¬â or the araby ââ¬â as he had to wait for his uncle from whom the money he needs will come from.Upon reaching the bazaar, he saw that most of the stalls were already closed and he can no longer fulfill his promise of buying something for the apple of his eye. In the end, he was utterly frustrated and he seemed inert as that feeling gobbled his whole self.Having these two texts at hand, we can find a common theme that is both incorporated in both of them. We can see in these stories how the characters were carried away and frustrated by their circumstances. The concept of the circumstantial forces impinging themselves on human beings and molding the form of their lives is visible in both Updikeââ¬â¢s A&P and Joyceââ¬â¢s Araby.The only difference between the two stories in terms of that theme is the way the characters have responded to that force of circumstances.In A&P the entrance of the ââ¬Å"scandalously dressedâ⬠ladies created a commotion inside the A&P ââ¬â a convenience store that is open to the public. The commotion was caused by the fact that the ladies were inappropriately dressed. The store was located on the town ââ¬â right at the very heart of the city. Evidently, the store was located in a public place.The ladies were wearing clothes as if they are by themselves only and not exposed to many people. One wears a plaid two-piece in green while another wears an off-shoulder bathing suit. The incompatibility of these two elements signals the emergence of the idea that the ladies were swerving from the norm and a necessary action must be done to check what they were doing.This action was made by the manager of the store, Lengel. Wit h all grit and strictness, he accosted the ladies and gave them some serious verbal beating. He established his authority to scold the girls and show to them his disapproval of their deportment and his implication that they leave the store: ââ¬Å"Girls, this isnââ¬â¢t the beach.â⬠(Hart 134).Queenie, the head of the ladies tried to argue for their case against the overture made by the manager but she failed. Lengel did not turned out to be gentle and a pushover. He really intended to assert his position and drive the ladies away ââ¬âwhich he actually did.
